What Announcement Will the Government Make on Highly Skilled Information Technology Workers?

According To Government sources, Liz Truss is getting ready to make an announcement about allowing more highly skilled workers and lowly paid seasonal workers like farm workers.

In the past, when Governments have spoken about making it easier for highly skilled workers to enter the country they usually mean IT software developers.

She wants these IT software developers to come to the country to fill job vacancies.

She sees this as a way of boosting economic growth in her dash for growth strategy.

She wants to uncap the number of seasonal agricultural workers.

What are Government Plans for Broadband Engineers?

She also wants to completely lift the cap on broadband engineers.

It seems Liz Truss is very keen to allow as many broadband engineers into the country as we can get.

She wants to fulfill a pledge to make full fibre broadband available to 85% of UK homes by 2025.

To fulfill this promise she needs to get her hands on as many broadband engineers as she can.

However, it is not just broadband engineers that she wants more of.

She wants many more IT workers to fill the supposed 2 million vacancies that there supposedly were this month.

What Changes do the Government want to make to the Shortage Occupations List?

She wants to make major changes to the Shortage Occupations List. Companies can recruit as many people as they want from abroad if the skill they have is on the shortage occupations list.

Many of these skills on the shortage occupation List are IT Skills – and many of these are to be found in low wage countries.

She also intends to get rid of the English language requirement in some sectors, like Information Technology. This would allow more foreign IT workers to qualify for visas.

What New Visa will the Government create for Students of Top Foreign Universities?

In her rush to get more highly educated workers, many in Information Technology, to come to the UK, she is considering a suggestion that anyone who got a degree from any of the top 50 to 100 universities would automatically qualify for a new type of visa to cone and work in the UK.

This is yet another government who believes there is a massive shortage in Information Technology skills and bringing in foreign IT workers won’t affect UK IT workers as they all have jobs anyway.

It seems that Cabinet Office minister, Nadhim Zahawi, chaired a meeting about those proposed changes last week.

It seems he is very much in favour of updating the shortage occupation list.

Why do the Government Want a Freedom of Movement Agreement with the Indian Government?

It also seems that they are looking at proposals for a ‘freedom of movement’ agreement with the Indian Government.

This almost certainly pertains to Information Technology jobs.

Kwasi Kwarteng, the new Chancellor, supposedly supports these moves he said “to ensure the immigration system supports growth while maintaining control”.

He said that the Government would be making an announcement on relaxing immigration rules in the next few weeks.

How Are the Government Doing in their Pledge to Reduce Immigration?

On leaving the EU the Government said they would be introducing a new immigration system which would bring down overall levels of immigration.

According to the Office for National statistics there are almost 1.8 million non-EU workers working in the UK. That’s an astonishing 302,000 more than there were a year ago.

Home Office figures show that the amount of visas given to all workers, students and their relatives has risen by 80% in a year to over 1.1 million. That’s both EU and non-EU.

Astonishingly that is the largest number ever recorded.

Most people, when they voted for Brexit, expected that the country would become a little poorer once it had left the biggest trade market in the world.

However, they did expect that immigration levels would fall.

Who would have thought that the next few years would have seen the biggest jump ever in immigration – and the Government are planning more.

The people ARE poorer after leaving the EU – and there is now more competition for their jobs.
