Make an Interviewer Feel Positive

The signals we give off at an interview make an interviewer feel positive or negative about us.

Remember that most interviews are passed or failed in the first two minutes, so there must be something in the signals we give out.

Here is some advice from Aussie contractor site Brainbox on how to give off positive signals to the interviewer.

Giving Positive Interview Signals

successful interviews
Good interviews

Body Position/Reaction
Leaning forward
Arms open
Palms upward

Communicates
Responding, engaged in this conversation

Notes
Notice how when one of you leans forward, the other will unconsciously do the same. Consciously lean forward to show you are engaged in the conversation, and by forcing them (unconsciously) to lean in you will force them to engage with you.

Using Your Body

Body Position/Reaction
Head tilted

Communicates
Reflecting

Notes
Avoid tilting too far this can indicate skepticism

Body Position/Reaction
Eye contact

Communicates
Listening

Notes
But don’t over-do the eye contact or you will look a bit scary

Body Position/Reaction
Nodding
Blinking

Communicates
Understanding

Notes
If you don’t understand however, ask! And don’t blink too much; you will simply look like you have an eye problem.

Using Body Position

Body Position/Reaction
Leaning in
Legs open
Feet under chair
(knees forward)

Communicates
Eager

Notes
If female and wearing a skirt, substitute ‘legs open’ with ‘cross feet at ankles’.

Body Position/Reaction
Smiling

Communicates
Agreement, Understanding, Liking

Notes
By far the best non-verbal clue, communicates a very positive message. Unless of course, you smile like a maniac.

Using Your Arms to Communicate

Body Position/Reaction
Arms behind back
(when standing)

Communicates
Paying attention, Listening carefully

Notes
Unlikely that you will be standing in an interview though.

Sucking on Pencil

Body Position/Reaction
Sucking on pen/pencil

Communicates
Evaluating info

Notes
Leave these to the interviewer!

Body Position/Reaction
Stroking chin,
Eyes looking upwards & right

Communicates
Contemplating info

Notes
But if you do this for too long you risk appearing either stupid or bored.

Body Position/Reaction
Putting down an object (e.
g. pen), putting hands
flat down on table

Communicates
Ready to make agreement

Notes
Watch an interviewer for these signs. They are ready to negotiate – unless they seem aggressive in which case they are about to disagree with you.

These are ways to help you make an interviewer feel positive towards you.
